HAL and Safran Aircraft Engines join hands to boost India’s aero-engine ecosystem
India’s leading aviation company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Safran Aircraft Engines, the French global leader in aero engine design, development and manufacturing, signed today a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) announcing their intent to develop industrial cooperation in forging parts’ manufacturing for commercial engines. This MoU is a significant step towards strengthening the long-term partnership between HAL and Safran Aircraft Engines, which dates back to 1960s when HAL started manufacturing the Artouste engine for Chetak helicopters under license from Safran. Since then, the two companies have collaborated on various projects, such as the Shakti engine for Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), the M53 engine for Mirage 2000 fighters, and the M88 engine for Rafale jets.
Under the terms of the MoU, HAL will produce LEAP engine parts for Safran Aircraft Engines in its facilities in Bangalore, supporting Government of India’s “Make in India” policy as well as the LEAP program unprecedented ramp-up. The LEAP engine is one of the most advanced and fuel-efficient turbofan engines in the world, powering more than 2,200 aircraft operated by 75% of Indian commercial airlines.
Safran Aircraft Engines’ long-term ambition is to develop a comprehensive aero engines ecosystem in India, which will include production, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), training and upgrade of high-thrust engines of 110 kN power and above. Such projects will help make Indian industry ready for further ambitious indigenous programs like AMCA (Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft) engine.
The MoU also reflects the mutual trust and respect between HAL and Safran Aircraft Engines, which share a common vision of excellence and innovation in the field of aero engines. Both companies are committed to supporting the growing domestic market and enhancing India’s sovereign capabilities in aero engines design and manufacturing.
